PrEP is available in Medellin, but the process is different from the United States. This guide explains how to get PrEP legally and safely in Colombia. Please note that this guide is specifically for Truvada (Generic) and not Descovy as Descovy is not yet readily available as of this January 2026.

Get a Colombian PrEP Prescription
To obtain PrEP, you must consult a doctor in Colombia. Any licensed doctor can prescribe PrEP after reviewing your lab results.

If you already have a US PrEP prescription, you can show it to her and she can issue a Colombian prescription.

Where to get testing for PrEP?
Lab testing is required to start or continue PrEP. If you need lab testing, you can visit any Bioreferencia location in Medellin and pay privately.
- If you are paying for PrEP out of pocket, Colombia does not have a requirement for the testing to get a prescription for PrEP without insurance, so you will need to do your own monthly testing and you can get up to 6 months at a time based on your prescription. Please follow directions below on how to purchase PrEP
- If you are using EPS or Private Colombian Insurance to pay for PrEP, they will only offer you PrEP monthly for free, and they will require you to do testing at their facilities for free and will ship it to your house for free. Please contact your EPS Doctor for information and do not follow the information below for Purchasing PrEP
